The Aria S242 is capable of reaching cruise speeds of up to Mach 2.5 (1666 knots; 3085 km/h), making the S242 the fastest airliner in the world. With an extended range of up to 9400 nm / 17,409 km, the S242 is most commonly seen operating on high-demand, long-range intercontinental routes.

The Aria S242 is currently available in two passenger airliner variants - a Standard Range version (Aria S242 Supersonic SR) or an Extended Range version (Aria S242 Supersonic XR) - or in a business jet configuration known as the Aria S242b Supersonic Bizjet, which is an adaptation of the S242 XR.

During the development and design stages, Aria Aircraft had considered developing a cargo and/or combi version of the aircraft, but ultimately decided to eventually create an aftermarket P2F (passenger to freighter) conversion program instead. The converted freighter would likely be named the Aria S242-P2F.
