The ATR 72 is a four-abreast, short range, twin engine turboprop regional airliner produced by ATR, a French-Italian aircraft manufacturer based in Toulouse, France. ATR is a joint venture between Aérospatiale of France (now Airbus) and Aeritalia (now Leonardo) of Italy.
Introduced in 1989, the ATR 72 is a stretched version of the ATR 42, which itself entered revenue service in 1985. The two aircraft share high commonality and interoperability, and properly trained flight crews are authorized to operate either type at will. The number 72 in the ATR 72’s name refers to its original seating capacity of 72 passengers.
Over the years since its entry into service, several later variants of the ATR 72 have been introduced with various improvements such as new avionics, a glass cockpit, more powerful and fuel efficient engines, and cabin upgrades. The latest variants are the ATR 72-600 and the ATR 72-600 HighLine Edition, the latter of which offers customers specialized business class, executive, and government VIP configurations.

The ATR 72 remains in production and active service as of early 2025, and is available in passenger, combi, cargo (ATR-72F), corporate transport, or maritime patrol configurations.
