Aircraft / McDonnell Douglas MD-80
The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is an American five-abreast, twin-engine narrow-body series of jet airliners manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, a company based in Long Beach, California that was the progeny of a merger between the Douglas Aircraft Company and the St Louis, Missouri-based McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The MD-80 series is a member of the successful Douglas DC-9 family of aircraft, and the type went on to be further developed into the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 and Boeing 717.
McDonnell Douglas ceased production of the MD-80 series of aircraft in 1999 after producing 1191 units, after which production was switched over to the newer generation MD-90 series and Boeing 717 following McDonnell Douglas’ merger into Boeing that same year. About 100 MD-80s remain in service.
