The Airbus A350-900 is a long-range, wide-body twin-engine jet airliner produced by Airbus SE, a European multinational aerospace manufacturer headquartered at Blagnac (Toulouse), France. It is one of two variants of the type, the other being the Airbus A350-1000.
The initial A350 design was first proposed in 2004 as a response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which was under development at the time. The original A350 design was a revamped Airbus A330 featuring composite wings, advanced winglets, and new efficient engines. After receiving tepid market support, in 2006 Airbus reset the A350 to become a new, clean-sheet "XWB" (eXtra Wide Body) design featuring two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB high bypass turbofan engines. The base variant Airbus A350-900 first flew on 14 June 2013 from Toulouse, France, and type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) was attained in September 2014, followed certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in November 2014. The A350 entered revenue service 15 January 2015.
The Airbus A350 is available by default as a passenger aircraft, with 658 units produced as of mid 2025. The A350 is currently produced in three major variants:
Airbus A350-900, the standard base model introduced in 2015, which carries 315-440 passengers;
Airbus A350-900ULR, an ultra long range version of the A350-900 that is visually identical to the standard -900 model, but features additional fuel tanks and increased weight capacity, carrying 161-253 passengers; and
Airbus A350-1000, a stretch version of the A350-900 introduced in 2018, which carries 369-480 passengers.
In addition to these, there is a dedicated business jet variant of the Airbus A350-900ULR, marketed as the Airbus ACJ350, is available. A dedicated freighter version of the A350, the Airbus A350F, is currently under development and expected to enter production by 2027.
There are no aftermarket freighter conversion programs available for the A350; however, one or more such programs will likely be developed by the late 2020s or early 2030s.
