One of four variations of the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft family, the Boeing 737-800 is a narrow-body, medium range twin-engine jet airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, a division of The Boeing Company. Boeing Commercial Airplanes is headquartered in Renton, Washington USA, while the parent company’s head office is located in Arlington, Virginia USA.
The Boeing 737-800 is a stretched version of the Boeing 737-700. It replaced the previous “Classic” generation Boeing 737-400 and the iconic Boeing 727-200 trijet. It also competed directly against the Airbus A320-200, and after the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger in 1997, the 737-800 more or less superseded the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and McDonnell Douglas MD-90 series of aircraft as well.
The 737-800 was sold by default only in passenger configuration. However, aftermarket freighter conversions (Boeing 737-800BCF and Boeing 737-800SF) of the 737-800 have greatly extended the type’s lifespan, and a Boeing 737-800 BBJ2 business jet variant was also produced.
Production of the 737-800 ended in December 2019, having been replaced the new generation Boeing 737 Max 8. In all, 4989 Boeing 737-800 airliners and 23 Boeing BBJ2 business jets were built, making the 737-800 one of Boeing’s most successful aircraft programs.
