One of four planned variations of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft family, the Boeing 737 MAX 9 is a narrow-body, medium range twin-engine jet airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, a division of The Boeing Company. Boeing Commercial Airplanes is headquartered in Renton, Washington USA, while the parent company’s head office is located in Arlington, Virginia USA.

The Boeing 737 MAX 9 is part of the 4th generation of the Boeing 737 family of aircraft. It succeeds the prior generation Boeing 737-900ER “Next Generation” (NG) stretch airliner, whose sibling aircraft also included the Boeing 737-600, Boeing 737-700, and Boeing 737-800. The NG series of 737 aircraft were first announced in 2011, and the 737 MAX 9 made its maiden flight in April 2017. The 737 MAX 9 was introduced into service in March 2018.

While it is based largely on its prior generation ancestors, the 737 MAX 9 features more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B engines, aerodynamic changes including a more fuel efficient split-tip winglet, a Speed Trim System (STS), certain airframe modifications, improvements to its glass cockpit, and upgrades to its cabin interior brought over from the successful Boeing 787 program.

There is little difference between the 737 MAX 9 and its other 737 MAX siblings, other than the length of its fuselage and its seating capacity. Consequently, all pilots certified to fly the 737 MAX may operate any of the 737 MAX variants. Pilots who were previously certified to fly the older 737 NG series can obtain 737 MAX aircraft certification after taking a fairly short differences-training course.

The 737 MAX 9 is currently available only in a passenger configuration. It seems plausible that someday a freighter conversion program for the 737 MAX 9 may appear, but presently no such program exists.
